Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra is planning to build a “modern city” in Cambodia, including a financial district, port and ship repair facility, according to international news agency AFP.
The former Thai prime minister and telecoms billionaire, who was outsted in a 2006 military coup, has been in discussion with Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen the plans for Koh Kong province, near the Thai border.
Thaksin missed Manchester City’s home game with Chelsea in early April because he was playing golf with the Cambodian leader.AFP quoted Hun Sen's spokesman, Eang Sophalleth, as saying:
"He did not say how much money will be invested, he just told Prime Minister Hun Sen about his plan." Eang Sophalleth said Hun Sen welcomed the plan, asking Thaksin to work on his project with the Council for the Development of Cambodia, reported AFP.
Thaksin was toppled in a military coup in September 2006 and went into self-imposed exile in Britain but he has been active in Thailand since he returned to Bangkok in February after a political parties made up of former colleagues won a general election
