VietNamNet Bridge – Mekong Delta Soc Trang province has invested more than 52 billion VND in building and restoring ethnic Khmer people’s places of worship in a move to support their religious activities, a local official said.

Head of the Soc Trang Ethnic Minorities Committee Lam Ren said so far, more than 80 percent of pagodas in the province have been built or upgraded with the provincial investment.

The Pali supplementary school, which trains monks and nuns for Khmer pagodas in Soc Trang and other southern provinces, for instance, received 28.5 billion VND.

Other beneficiaries included the 16th century Mahatup pagoda or Bat Pagoda (Chua Doi) – a recognised national cultural and historical relic which was restored after being ruined in last year’s fires.
