At least fifteen homes were ravaged by a fire which broke out in the morning of Wednesday March 18th on Street 438, Tuol Tumpoung II commune, Phnom Penh.

According to director of the capital’s fire department Net Chantha, all residents were evacuated in time and the fire did not claim any life.

The fire caused important damage; apart from dwellings, the police numbered some twenty two-wheeled vehicles were destroyed in the blaze. Some inhabitants had to leave the site without being able to save their personal property.

The fire brigade only brought the fire under control after an hour and a half of fighting. Fourteen firefighting vehicles were needed to manage the situation. According to Net Chantha, much damage could have been avoided if Phnom Penh firefighters had been better equipped with modern gear which, he says, they still lack.
