Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong on Tuesday left for US to attend an annual summit of the UN Assembly. He will have a special talk with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to strengthen bilateral cooperation, according to a Tuesday statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC).

“The Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong led a delegation to participate in the General Debate of the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly to be held from 23 to 30 September 2009 in New York,” said the statement.

“On the sideline of the said meeting, Deputy PM Hor Namhong is also scheduled to have some bilateral meetings, including with the [US] Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,” the statement added.

Koy Kuong, MFAIC spokesman, said that cooperation between Cambodia and USwill be deepened. However, criticism from the Tom Lantos Human Right Commission would not affect the cooperation among the two countries, he stressed. “Deputy PM Hor Namhong will have a special discussion with Hillary Clinton on September 28, 2009 in New York,” he confirmed.

“I will leave for the US on September 22, but the date for talks with Hillary Clinton is undecided as the two parties are considering selec- ting a suitable time for the meeting,” Hor Namhong told reporters recently at the MFAIC.

“The bilateral talks are mainly to promote and push for more cooperation between the two parties,” he confirmed. Hor Namhong told US Ambassador to Cambodia Carol A. Rodley that Cambodia and US cooperation is developing. “Especially, the US Government decided to withdraw Cambodia out of its trade black list in June,” he said.
