Cambodia to Hold First Climate Change Forum

Written by DAP NEWS -- Friday, 16 October 2009

Cambodia will hold the First National Forum on Climate Change October 19-21. The event will see Government leaders, development partners and stakeholders discuss challenges and opportunities posed by climate change for Cambodia, press release said.

The forum, the first of its kind, aims to help the Cambodian public to better understand that climate change is not just an environmental but a development issue with far-reaching consequences for Cambodia’s progress toward achieving Millennium Development Goals. “The threat of climate change is real, and without actions now, the impacts can be costly for Cambodia, a poor country where a large portion of the population lives in the countryside and relies on agriculture for a living. Collective efforts at all levels of the society are required to minimize the impacts,” the press release said. “But climate change also presents opportunities for Cambodia in working with stakeholders and development partners to ensure sustainable development and economic growth in the future.”

Prime Minister Hun Sen will deliver a keynote speech opening the forum at Chaktomuk Conference Hall in the afternoon of October19. On October 20-21, the forum will be held at InterContinental Hotel. The event is being organized by the National Climate Change Committee through the Ministry of Environment, with support from Oxfam and UNDP Cambodia.
