Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday urged the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) to promote development in Cambodia and build a closer relationship with Cambodia.

The premier on Wednesday met Kulchandra Gautan, deputy executive director of Unicef in Cambodia, for a discussion at the National Assembly.

“Kulchandra told the premier about development, including health and education of the children,” Ieng Sophallet, adviser to the Prime Minister, told reporters following the discussion.

The UNICEF sub executive director also urged the premier to help Cambodian children and women. Kulchandra noted that there are still some issues such as child trafficking, but birth fatalities are down.

“In the response, the premier said that the Royal Government of Cambodia is very proud of its cooperation with UNICEF, which has helped children since 1979,” Ieng Sophallet added.

The premier apparently told the guests that “Cambodia cannot disconnect from UNICEF’s role,” claiming that “Cambodia nearly achieved its educational policy of building one secondary for every commune.”
