PHNOM PENH, Nov. 17 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen urged more regional and global cooperation Tuesday to prevent and combat transnational crimes.
"Close cooperation between law enforcement agencies of member states in the region and the world, coupled with domestic interagency cooperation, will enable us to be successful in preventing, investigating and combating transnational crimes," he said in opening remarks to ministerial meetings on transnational crime in Cambodia's northern Siem Reap Province.
The forums, over two days, bring together ministers of security and criminal affairs from 13 countries in East Asia -- from the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations members and from China, South Korea and Japan.
Hun Sen said the meetings "are the evidence reflecting our commitment and strong will to seek all methods and common strategy to protect national security and lives of our innocent people from the intrusion of ruthless, criminal groups."
"The security situation can have a great influence on development and development cannot be sustained in the absence of peace and security," he added. "Fighting transnational crime, therefore, requires joint effort from all of us.
The ASEAN members are Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Myanmar.
