Promoting Vietnam-Cambodia good neighbourliness

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nong Duc Manh started his official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia today at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni.

It is the second visit by General Secretary Nong Duc Manh to Cambodia since March 2005 with the aim of enhancing the good neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation between Vietnam and Cambodia, thus contributing to raising Vietnam’s international position, especially in the context Vietnam will take chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from January 1, 2010.

The Vietnamese people are glad to see the Vietnam-Cambodia ties boosted by leaders and people of the two countries under the motto “ good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive and long-lasting co-operation” have achieved fine results. The recent high-ranking visits have contributed to strengthening the friendly ties and comprehensive co-operation in a more efficient and reliable manner.

Co-operation in economics, trade and investment has been well developed .Two-way trade reached US$1.7 billion in 2008 and both sides are striving to increase it to US$2 billion by 2010.Co-operation between ministries, sectors and localities from the two countries has also enhanced. The two sides have paid attention to promoting co-operation in implementing the signed agreements and co-ordinating to deal with issues related to the border line, maintaining security and stability in border areas and have agreed to complete land border demarcation and landmarkers planting by 2012. The two countries set up a Joint Committee on Economic, Cultural, Scientific and Technological Co-operation to promote co-operation in the various fields.

Vietnam and Cambodia have also boosted co-operation in theregional and multilateral framework such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). The West-East Corridor (WEC), the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Strategy (ACMECS) and Cambodia-Laos Vietnam Development Triangle.

May the visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia by Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh be crowned with success, thus contributing to enhancing the Vietnam- Cambodia traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation for the benefits of the peoples of both countries and for peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region and the world.
