Police in Kandal province said Tuesday that they were investigating a Monday night grenade attack on a commune chief that they suspect was related to ongoing land disputes. No one was injured in the attack in which a grenade was launched into the home of Thuch Chanthou, chief of Am Povprey commune, Kandal Stung district. District police Chief Sim Buth Bandidh said police had identified an obvious motive, but had no leads in the case and were “grinding their knuckles” to solve it. “Touch Chanthou has been the subject of many scandals related to land disputes, and has generated a lot of negative sentiment through some of his decisions, which might cause some people to seek revenge,” he said. But Touch Chanthou said Tuesday that the attack had nothing to do with revenge, though he conceded that he had made some unpopular decisions. “There are always people who are happy and unhappy with my choices,” he said.
