Access to the Internet is a must for university students and young professionals alike. While there is always the option of going to an Internet shop to do your online research, communicate or play games, a growing number of students are going to coffee houses and cafés to get on the information superhighway. You can get a fast connection and a cup of coffee for about the same price as you would pay to use the many Web shops that dot the city (as long as you drink your coffee really slowly). Here are our choices for the three best Wi-Fi spots in Phnom Penh.

Royal Coffee: Besides its super-convenient location for students at Royal University of Phnom Penh, Royal Coffee has a lot of things to keep customers coming back. Any customer who orders a drink or food can get a slip of paper with the online password and unlimited access to the 1GB connection.

Drinks cost around US$1, and there is no limit to the amount of time you can spend on the net. Nov Savavery, the operations manager of Royal Coffee, says that the broadband is large enough that even when the cafe is filled with students, the connection remains fast.

There is a steady flow of students throughout the day, so if you get bored with talking to your friends online, there is sure to be someone there who you can talk to in person.

ICafe: The Internet policy at ICafe is the same as Royal Coffee’s – when you buy a drink, you get Internet access, but the price and the speed are different. A cup of coffee only costs $0.75, but in return you get a much slower Internet connection.

ICafe manager Sokhem said that because they have just recently opened, the connection is only 128MB, but that as more people come to the cafe wanting to use the Internet, they will expand the width of their broadband.

“Customers can still download files and watch movies,” Sokhem said. If you want to save some money and you aren’t in any rush, ICafe is the place for you.

Café Sentiment: For about $1, customers can get both a drink and free access to Wi-Fi service. “Here, customers will get a very fast Wi-Fi with 1GB, if they order a drink or food in the shop,” said Tiv Chhun, the general Manager of Café Sentiment. LIFT
