Diarrhoea death reported

A 28-year-old man has died and six more young people are seriously ill with diarrhoea in Kampong Leng district, Kampong Chhnang province, a local source said Tuesday.

District Governor Mean Eang Ly said no cases of cholera have been confirmed in his district, and that he is focusing on educating people about how to prevent the spread of diarrhoea.

Meanwhile, diarrhoea cases seem to have decreased in Kampong Speu province after health officials implemented education campaigns in the area, director of the Provincial Health Department Or Vanthan said Tuesday. “There are still some patients coming to hospital, but not many and their diseases don’t seem so serious,” he said.

According to the World Health Organisation figures, there were over 8,000 cases of acute watery diarrhoea recorded in Cambodia in January 2010.
