POLICE ACT TO STOP MONK VIOLENCE
A 20-year-old monk in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district was arrested last Wednesday and accused of striking an elderly monk in the face after taking offence at a barrage of criticism directed his way. Police said the 73-year-old target of the assault was beaten after he asked whether any of his younger cohorts had been responsible for gathering food from the villagers and failing to bring some back home for him. This prompted the younger monk to turn violent. Police arrested the suspect and said they are preparing to bring him to Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

DANCING STABBING SUSPECT ARRESTED
A 29-year-old man was arrested last Thursday for a stabbing incident that apparently took place at a dance party in January. Police in Koh Kong province said the man and the 24-year-old victim of the stabbing had been bickering all day after falling into some sort of heated disagreement. That evening, the 29-year-old allegedly stabbed the younger man while both men were both showing off their best moves at the dance party. Police said they made the arrest after “a long investigation”, and that the suspect had been sent to court.

HUNGRY MAN DIES LOOKING FOR SNACK
A 23-year-old man in Prey Veng province died last week after he was bitten by a poisonous snake while looking for a tasty snack in the middle of a field. Witnesses said the man had stuck his hand down a rather promising looking hole. When he was bitten, he assumed it was merely a wee mouse that did the deed and thought nothing of it. But after he and his family continued to dig near the hole, they found a snake and realised what had happened. The man’s worried family rushed him to hospital, but he succumbed to the snakebite on the way.

COPS FIND ROBBERY SUSPECT IN PAGODA
A 24-year-old man accused of breaking into a jewellery vendor’s store more than a year ago was finally arrested last Thursday while apparently hiding out in a Kampot province pagoda. The victim said she lost 375 grams of jewellery as well as 12 million riels, or US$3,000, during the brazen theft. Police arrested the suspect at a local pagoda after the man had asked the head of the pagoda if he could lie low there for a while. Police said the arrest was the result of a helpful tip from local villagers. Police have not identified any other suspects in the case.
