Undaunted by hard-fought defeats to Romania and Mexico, the Happy Football Cambodia Australia team representing the Kingdom at the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro pulled off a noteworthy 10-2 victory Tuesday over Canada.

The Cambodian charge was led by Keo Rith Chun’s four-goal haul, spread evenly over two seven-minute halves, with support from a Chorbb Loat double and contributions from Sovannara Chak, Vanny Yang and Sithyrith Han in a game where Canada were restricted to just one good spell of pressure early in the second half.

“Fine goalkeeping by Thauary limited the Canadian advance by just one goal during that tough spell,” head coach Jimmy Campbell said in an email to the Post yesterday.

“Romania and Mexico were very strong, though the boys did well to put up a fight. But they were determined to do well in their third game. I was happy they clicked.”

Cambodia lost 10-2 in their remaining preliminary group game Tuesday against a physically superior Ireland outfit, and were subsequently put in group H of the secondary stage alongside Namibia, India and Croatia.

The biggest buzz around the world famous Copacabana beach, where a new street soccer stadium has been built to seat 5,000 spectators, came from the participation of Palestine for the first time at the tournament. The highlight of the third day of the group phase Tuesday was Palestine’s gritty display in their 5-2 loss to previous winners and this year’s favourites Poland.

Meanwhile, Dutch goalkeeper Dameri turned a hero as the Netherlands claimed a popular 5-1 victory over Namibia, while the day’s top performance came from Kenya, who showed impressive form in their 11-2 defeat of South Korea.
