THE director of Banteay Meanchey provincial prison said yesterday that the Ministry of Interior had temporarily suspended him and three security guards pending an investigation into the escape of a 29-year-old Cambodian-American prisoner last month. Nuon Vanna said he and three other officials were removed from their posts after being accused of negligence and accepting bribes following the September 20 escape of Alexander Proeun, who was convicted in 2008 of illegally detaining people and sentenced to 17 years in prison. “I was just temporarily suspended from the post and transferred to work at the Ministry of Interior for a while pending the completion of the investigation,” Nuon Vanna said.
