Journalists ready to sue

THREE journalists from Kratie province are preparing to sue a police official for allegedly making death threats against them last week, after they reportedly accused him of involvement with an illegal logging ring. Hang Sovanna, the publisher of the Raksmey Borey newspaper, said yesterday that the trio had filed complaints with the Kratie police chief and local rights groups, accusing provincial police official Chea Nak of threatening them October 29. Hang Sovanna said Chea Nak had waved a gun at the trio after they discovered his car filled with illegal timber, saying “I will shoot at your heads to kill,” and accusing them of extortion. Chea Nak yesterday denied that he had waved a gun at the journalists, though he said he had used “improper words” during the altercation.

Japan donates bicycles

A JAPANESE company has donated 690 bicycles to students in Kampong Cham and Kampong Chhnang provinces, the Ministry of Information announced yesterday. Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said the donation was designed to help children living in poverty to stay in school. “Most of the poor students abandon school because the school is far from their houses, so the bike is very important for them,” he said. A representative of the company said the Japanese were “so happy” to have donated the bicyles.
