Cambodian PM: Relations between Cambodia and Thailand Returns to Normal

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- The relations between Cambodia and Thailand returned to the date before July 15, 2008 due to four time meetings between the premiers of the two nations, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony held on Dec. 6 at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian premier said, “I don’t want to make any public statement, but I can say the problem has been solved out and the situation retuned to that before July 15, 2008.”

He said Thai Foreign Minister H.E. Kasit Piromya will visit Cambodia on Dec. 19 to participate in the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Thailand.

He said the problems are not complete, but in the future there are still the issues of border demarcations, demining and opening more border gates to accelerate the bilateral cooperation.

The premier also praised the joint Cambodian-Thai concert on Nov. 28 at the Indoor Stadium in Bangkok, and live televised to Cambodia through the National Television of Cambodia and TV3 and in the future, such concert will be held in Cambodia and will live televise to Thailand.

The relations between the two countries are much better than before after they resent their ambassadors to hold their posts since early August. --AKP

PM Meets Vietnamese Prosecutor General

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, met here yesterday with Mr. Tran Quoc Vuong, Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy of Vietnam.

On the occasion, Mr. Tran Quoc Vuong told Samdech Techo Hun Sen of the long-term cooperation between the two countries judicial institutions.

He also informed Samdech Prime Minister Techo Hun Sen of the memorandum already signed between the two institutions, in which both sides will further cooperate on terrorism combating, and support each other to promote the judicial system in both countries.

In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed his support to the memorandum and thanked the Vietnamese government and people as well as companies for their contributions to help stampede victims at Phnom Penh’s Pich Bridge on the last day of Cambodian annual Water Festival on Nov. 22. --AKP

Cambodia To Host International Landmine Meeting in 2011

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- Cambodia will host the 11th UN’s Mine Ban Treaty in 2011.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen made known here yesterday at a graduation ceremony at the National Institute of Education.

The meeting is a good opportunity for Cambodia to demonstrate its capacity on mine clearance and also shows a trust in Cambodia, Delegate Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Authority H.E. Prak Sokhon, told reporters at Phnom Penh International Airport on Dec. 5 upon returning from the 10th Ottawa Treaty Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

Cambodia has well experienced in mine clearance and in reducing the casualties from mine, he said, adding that the victims affected by mine fell from 4,320 in 1996 to 244 in 2009. --AKP

Cambodian Premier Presides Over Graduation Ceremony

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen presided over a graduation ceremony held here on Dec. 6 at the National Institute of Education.

As many as 1,280 teachers, of them 390 women, received their certificates.

In his speech, the Cambodian premier urged the graduates to increase their knowledge by conducting self-study and research.

Each year, the royal government gives priority only to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Health to recruit new staff to replace the retired ones, he said.

At least 3,000 education officials are retired annually, while 5,000 new officials are recruited, he pointed out.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also announced an increase by 20 percent of the government officials’ salary next year. --AKP

USS Mustin Commander Learns about CMAC’s Demining Activities

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- Cambodian-born commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz of the U.S. guided-missile destroyer named USS Mustin (DDG89) paid a visit on Monday to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) to learn about mine clearance activities in Cambodia.

On the occasion, CMAC General Director Heng Rattana highlighted the important role of CMAC in mine clearance and unexploded ordnance destruction in Cambodia so as to ensure people’s safety.

For his part, Commodore Misiewicz congratulated and highly appreciated CMAC’s efforts in demining activities.

In 1973, Misiewicz was adopted by an American woman and escaped to the United States before the infamous Khmer Rouge took complete power in Cambodia between 1975 and early 1979, during which his father was killed.

“I can realize my dream of visiting Cambodia and meet my relatives now,” said Misiewicz in a press interview, adding that this visit helps cheer up his sad past of losing his father and that he is glad to see the relationship between Cambodia and the U.S. is blooming.

USS Mustin (DDG89) on Dec. 3 docked at Preah Sihanouk province’s seaport for five-day humanitarian activities – distributing educational materials to orphans, performing concert for the locals and playing friendship sports with the Cambodian counterpart.

The 155-meter long and 20-meter wide U.S. guided-missile destroyer has a total number 276 crew and sailors on board, of them four are Cambodian-born. --AKP

Thai Journalists To Visit Cambodia This Month

Phnom Penh, December 7, 2010 AKP -- A delegation of 12 Thai journalists will make a reciprocal visit to Cambodia from Dec. 18 to 21, said the Royal Thai Embassy in a letter sent to the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Thai delegation is scheduled to pay courtesy calls on senior members of the Royal Government of Cambodia and hold meeting with representatives of the Cambodian Press Association.

Representatives of Cambodian media made a visit to Thailand on Oct. 17-22, 2010. --AKP
